F1 On This Day, 09/03

Posted: 09/03/2010 in Formula 1

For such a famous and successful team McLaren were having a lean time of it in the mid-1990’s as Williams ruled the track. Today in 1997 the team showed the signs that they were finally on their way back to the top when David Coulthard won the first win in 50 races.

The race was also notable for being the first to be covered by ITV since it had won the rights to cover F1 from the BBC. Murray Walker was joined by the excellent Martin Brundle in the commentary box. The race also marked the first appearance on the F1 circuit of the Lola team. The famous marque had run successful cars in all sorts of formula but found F1 a little tougher. The two drivers Vincenzo Sospiri and Ricardo Rosset failed to qualify.
