F1 On This Day…. 08/03

Posted: 08/03/2010 in Formula 1

After years of Williams’ domination the F1 circus turned up at Melbourne for the opening round of the 1998 World Championship to find the team from Grove was no longer top dog. The McLaren-mercedes cars locked out the front row with Mika Hakkinen just ahead of David Coulthard. The race, run on this day, was to prove controversial when Hakkinen came into the pits on lap 36 thinking he had been called in by the team. They waved him on but he had lost the lead to Coulthard, who moved over for his teammate just before the end to give the Finnish driver the win.

The team was heavily criticised and there was talk of a pre-race agreement by the two drivers but it was later revealed someone had hacked into Hakkinen’s radio and told him to pit.
