F1 On this day….

Niki Lauda was the reigning World Champion when the drivers lined up for the first race of the 1976 season in Brazil on this day. The race was the first to be started by a system of lights rather than the traditional flag but it didn’t stop Lauda taking the victory. It was the start of a great run which saw him take four wins from the first six races. He looked odds-on to retain his championship until his horrific crash at the Nurburgring in August where he very nearly died.
