Niki Lauda was the reigning World Champion when the drivers lined up for the first race of the 1976 season in Brazil on this day.┬áThe race was the first to be started by a system of lights rather than the traditional flag but it didn’t stop Lauda taking the victory. It was the start of a great run which saw him take four wins from the first six races. He looked odds-on to retain his championship until his horrific crash at the Nurburgring in August where he very nearly died.
